The Virginia Office of Data Governance and Analytics has appointed longtime finance security executive Ken Pfeil as its new chief data officer.

The office shared the news last Friday on Twitter, saying that Pfeil will help the commonwealth move closer to its goal of implementing data-driven policy, evidence-based decision-making and outcome-based performance management.

Former Gov. Ralph Northam created the role in 2018, appointing Carlos Rivero. In 2021, Rivero left the Office of Data Governance and Analytics to take on a vice president of data and analytics position at GCOM Software LLC.

Now, almost four months since Rivero’s departure, Pfeil will bring over a decade of industry experience to the job.

According to Pfeil’s LinkedIn page, his previous experience includes being vice president and managing director of data governance for OneMain Financial, a chief architect and chief information security officer for TechDemocracy LLC and a chief security officer for MFS Investment Management.

He also held other security-related positions at Capital IQ Inc., Miradiant Global Network, Microsoft and Merrill Lynch.
